The FLL team believes that books make the very best holiday gifts. We’re lucky to have so many wonderful, independent bookshops in and near Lancaster County. The owners of a few of those bookstores were happy to share some of their best literary gifting recommendations for the holiday season ahead. And a bonus: Books are so easy to wrap!

Plantopedia: The Definitive Guide to Houseplants is a rare type of reference book – so beautiful to look at that you will want to leave it out for everyone to see, but full of incredibly useful information. The book features detailed houseplant care information, including helpful tips for more than 130 plants. It’s designed for anyone from a novice plant owner to a seasoned “green thumb” expert. The photos and illustrations on every page are so gorgeous that your giftee will want to keep turning the pages no matter why you picked it for them!
Shark Heart: A Love Story is a stunning debut novel by Emily Habek that left us crying. Don’t let the initial setting of the book fool you. (The story is set in an alternate world where humans can have a genetic defect that causes them to mutate into different animal species!) While it doesn’t sound like a relatable premise, this book is actually about human relationships. The core of the narrative is a grounded love story between a husband and wife, and a mother and daughter. It’s also a story about dealing with change and loss. The mutations here are a metaphor for real world illnesses like cancer or ALS, and the love between the characters is magnified by the tragedies they overcome. If your recipient wants a book with a unique concept, great writing, and characters to invest in, consider gifting a copy of Shark Heart.
