Season’s Readings

The FLL team believes that books make the very best holiday gifts. We’re lucky to have so many wonderful, independent bookshops in and near Lancaster County. The owners of a few of those bookstores were happy to share some of their best literary gifting recommendations for the holiday season ahead. And a bonus: Books are so easy to wrap!

If you're looking for the perfect novel for the reader in your life, Pocket Books has you covered! We cannot keep Fourth Wing in stock; fantasy fans of all ages are going feral for this fast-paced fantasy novel about an elite war college for dragon riders. (Bonus points if you also grab the highly-anticipated sequel Iron Flame, out 11/7!) No one can put down R.F. Kuang's dark satire Yellowface, in which a white author 'borrows' her dead frenemy's manuscript and rebrands herself as the new voice of Asian-American literature, Juniper Song. Everything Kuang writes absolutely pulses with righteous anger, and we love that she's turned her skewering eye toward the publishing industry. True crime girlies and fans of psychological thrillers will love Bright Young Women, which focuses on three women whose lives are irrevocably ruptured by the violence of a notorious serial killer. This book is brutal and beautiful, and each woman's complicated relationship with her family, with the men who purport to love and/or protect them, and with society's general disdain for women like her is so compelling that the bookworm in your life will immediately stick this on the re-read pile!

If nonfiction is more your speed, don't worry! We think that Forest School for Grown-Ups is a stunning gift for anyone looking to (re)connect with nature; this gorgeous illustrated book will look great on a coffee table and contains countless tips, from foraging for beginners to building a campfire to learning forest lore. Who says only kids get to go play outside?! If your recipient is more of an indoor cat, Goblin Mode is a perfect choice. This guidebook teaches you how to get cozy and live according to the goblin principles of community, diversity, and joyful mess. Who can say no to a book that encourages its reader to embrace their rough edges and hold tight to the joy that can be found in weirdness? A big, beautiful cookbook is always an excellent gift, and we're drooling over Pasta: The Spirit and Craft of Italy's Greatest Food, which features recipes and wisdom from NYC's premier pasta chef, James Beard Award nominee Missy Robbins. Plus, maybe your giftee will make you a big bowl of pasta as a thank you — win/win!
